They provide a service which I assume requires some sort of infrastructure / connection / support. 69p or whatever it is doesn't seem too bad!0

Kik Messenger is a nice alternative and completely free.

As far as I remember - WhatsApp always gave you the first year free, and there would be a charge of 69p after that. I know that I definitely saw this when I signed up last year.
Personally - It's saved me 100x the 69p in sending photo/MMS costs already - so I don't mind paying going forward.0
