Cost of a basic funeral

most families dread not only losing a love one, but the bill at the end of the process, this rubs salt in the wound, with sometimes the funeral directors wanting the money up front, and the increasing cost of crematoria.
With a lot of people contributing towards the National Insurance, once that person has passed on, it is lost for ever,
My suggestion would be basic funeral cost to be met by NI fund, any add ons could be of course be up to the family should there be one.
Stop the life time of worry – make it a right for a basic free funeral.

To be fair, you have your whole life to save for it. Prefer the NI fund to go to the living to be honest.
The cost of funerals is absurd mind you.0 -
Thanks Mozette I think you may have missed the point, or I was not clear enough,
The idea is to refund the individuals un used NI fund paid into over the total working life.
Should some one be un fortunate to have no, or short retirement,
don't you agree the contribution would ease the burden on the next of kin. Or would you prefer it to be absorbed by central government, for use heaven knows where, just a thought.0 -

Not a bad idea fella. I'm a funeral director and i've said for a long time using un used NI should be a way of paying for a basic funeral. Another alternative is a pre paid funeral plan. Make sure the plan is guarenteed though. This will cover any rises in costs ie what you pay today is what you pay. I think funeral directors get a bad rap for the price of funerals but remember wages need to be payed and cars need fuel to carry out a funeral. 99% of funeral directors are here to help so make sure your comfortable with who your dealing with and if your not, call someone else0 -
I think it's a pretty good idea. Put it on Martin's 50 word 'Moneyfesto' thread, if you can find it. (No doubt someone will think of a reason why it can't happen but I know that I've been worried about MIL's, not that she is anywhere near dying yet. She does now have a funeral plan but it was an uncomfortable few months trying to get someone to see the need for it).:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0
