Tax Return/NI - Confusion

Hey all,

I have a full time job but have also registered self employed from 20th November 2012. I haven't recieved anything in the post about a tax return (in fact I haven't recieved anything at all since I registered) but I'm not sure if I should have done it or if it's for last year? I'm just so confused with the whole thing really!

Also, I was expecting to recieve something in the post to tell me how to register for my additional National Insurance. Have I not had anything because I pay it through full time work?

Sorry to be so daft, I thought I understood everything then the more I think about it the more confused I manage to make myself! Thanks for any help :)
Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.

You should receive your tax return demand about the end of March/beginning of April for tax year ending 05 April 2013.
(You have until end of Jan 2014 to complete it)
  • You will automatically be sent a national insurance bill twice a year to pay by Jan and July. Unlike tax, national insurance is separate for self employment and employment. If you intend to earn less than £5500 in self employment (I think that is threshold ish but I could be wrong) you can apply for exemption. You will need to ring them to do that.

If only the government used memorable round figures : £5595 this year, £5725 next year.
