    Another one to throw in the mix is the Kia Carens, reliable, cheap to run, cheap to service.

    My requirements are;
    Costs - circa £5000
    Reliable
    Cheap as possible to run (for a car of that size).
    I'd prefer sliding door but not essential.
    Cam chain engine preferred.
    Would be looking to keep the car 5 years.
    Not sure if petrol or diesel would be best as it will be for shortish journeys. - mileage is 7-8K per year.

    but probably cheaper/newer ones on autotrader.

    Try a Kia sedona i had one never missed a beat and they are fitted with a 2.9 mecedes diesel engine

    That's a bit of an urban legend, it isn't a Merc engine (that's no bad thing though!). I think because SsangYong used Merc engines everyone got a bit muddled up.

    It's a Hyundai diesel engine, and as I've mentioned in other threads, those guys can really produce a diesel.

    p.s. Galaxy/Alhambra/Sharan - terrible product, Galaxy officially Ford's most unreliable car ever! I don't think they will be teaming up with VAG again anytime soon...
    And that my son, is how to waft a towel!

    7-seater cars (like the Zafira) will be far too small to load and unload with any regularity.
    I agree. It just depends on the irregularity.

    we bought a zafria 2 1/2 years ago only use the 6/7 seats every now and again, can't fault it, it doesn't do big mileage but have done two long runs through europe in it. only minor downside for is its underpowered really, but 50 weeks of the year it does less than 5,000 miles.

    1.6 petrol club paid 5k for it on an 07 plate june 2010. ex mobility car had nearly 50k on it now stands at 67k and as i say can't fault it.

    with 7-8k/yr a petrol engine would be more cost effective. We have an older 2001 Honda Stream, we do around 8k a year, with a chain cam engine. It's been nothing short of utter reliable. We regularly have 6 kids on board the 7 seater, and still have a small boot for some shopping. You should be able to pick up a low mileage one for around 2.5-3k mark for a late model.
