Tax credit overpayment

I've been reading thru some threads & have worked out that we have been overpaid for tax credits for April 2011 - April 2012 as we put an estimate in as £12500 & our actual was £13769 I phoned them last thurs with our figure would it be to early to phone them today to see if our award has changed I'm worried because I worked out at the 46p per £1 thing we owe them £600 would we have to pay that back before the new tax year 2013, I've got 4 children & want to budget as normal any advice would be really welcomed :)

In your other thread you said your 10/11 income was actually lower? In which case there will be no overpayment.

If you estimated 12,500, they would have based your award on 10/11 income anyway. Then when you declared 13,769 it will still be based on 10/11 income due to the 10,000 disregard.

The only issue will be your current award as it is probably being based on 12,500 instead of 13,769. So you may have a small current overpayment.

  • Thankyou for your reply, yes it gets so confusing I think because we are always behind with our figure, our income for 10-11 was £12171 which is what I put in jan 2012, they then asked what our income would be 11-12, which I said base it on £12500, then when I phoned to give our actual it was £13869, I wish I could get my head around all this, I did have a baby in August which i did contact them about so I'm not worried about that, but obviously you get use to a payment & you make it work, not sure whether to phone them yet? :)
  • If you have given them the updated income for the year 11/12 and you have told them that you had a baby in August - did you get any SMP or Maternity allowance? If yes that could possibly bring the income down too, so you might be owed money.
  • Yes if you have been receiving maternity pay you are able to knock off £100 for every week you received it!!
