good morning all,
I'm trialling having porridge for breakfast instead of a boiled egg and toast. I work 9-3 with no lunch break and am starving by 1pm ! hoping the porridge will keep me going longer?
anyhow, how much dry porrige in weight woild be classed as a portion.i'm cooking it wiyh 1/2 water 1/2 full fat milk (need the vit d) I could easily eat a bowl full, but need to lose some weight too! (about 1/2 stone)
thanks in advance for any advice!

I do 75g porridge oats with 1/2 pint of water and 1/2 pint skimmed milk for two of us. So stick to around 35 g of oats and 1/2 pint of liquid and you should be fine. (BTW doesn't skimmed and semi-skimmed milk have the Vit D too?)0 -

thank you.
the vitamin D is greatly reduced in skimmed/semi !
I didn't realise that until last year, I had blood tests and found I needed more vit D for my poor old joints. It was the doctor who advised me on my diet.
I thought skimmed just had the fat missing and was being healthy! :rotfl:LIVE SIMPLY * GIVE MORE * EXPECT LESS * BE THANKFUL0 -

Interesting - I never knew that! Cheers.0 -
I never find porridge fills me up that much. I tend to be ravenous a few hours later. Nutritionally, eggs have more goodness in them and also protein which should fill you up for longer than the carbs in porridge. Could you have an omelette or eggs and bacon instead?June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

I find porridge a very satisfying breakfast in the cold weather. I use half a cup of oats, which weighs about 40g, a cup of liquid of your choice and I add quarter of a cup of fruit at the end. I like frozen blueberries and there is no need to defrost as the heat of the porridge does the trick.0

Hi,
I have porridge for breakfast, which on a workday means 5.45-6am,so quite early.I use 50g of porridge oats, water and a dash of cinnamon.I have it with milk and some golden syrup.Lunch is then about 12.30,but I do get a break anytime between 9.30-11am.
I'm not sure that porridge would fill me up until lunchtime if I didn't have a morning break.
Eggs might fill you up more because of the protein.0 -
mmm, well, food for thought!
i just weighed out 35g- i've been having about four times that amount!!!
maybe stick to the egg... or maybe alternate and see which is best.
think I need to compare point value with weight watchers too?

If you are not having lunch, have both. Have good thick bread for your toast and just mash the egg onto this then no need for butter.0

Funnily enough, I just posted about this very topic the other day.
When I was having toast AND porridge (:o) before work, I was absolutely ravenous before lunch. I'd then have a sandwich for lunch, be starving for dinner and then I'd 'have' to have a little pick at night.
When I switched to having eggs, wow! The difference is absolutely amazing. I started work at 1:30 yesterday and had scrambled eggs at about 11... I didn't eat anything else last night. Just NOT hungry at all! I actually can't bare to eat snacky things, I'm always full from meals.
A few tablespoonfuls of full fat yogurt mixed with some double cream also keeps me full for hours.
Or a nice grilled breakfast on occasion :A
I'd say if you're anythin like me, you need to up your fat and protein a bit. I've cut the unnecessary carbs and sugar out for the past few weeks - so absolutely NO low fat products what-so-ever. It's cheaper, it's fresher, it tastes better... and I've lost a stone without actually thinking about it :eek:0 -
I always have one small cup of porridge oats to two and a bit cups of water (I have a small cup that I use for this) I make the porridge and when its gloopy enough and just starting to bubble I pour into my dish and add a dash of milk and a sprinkle of salt This fills me up no probs untill lunchtime.Sometime I substitute for a small bowl of a mix of bran flakes and mueseli with a chopped banana on the top, this definitely keeps me full up0
