Speakers no longer working on PC ... except they do in VM

My speakers worked perfectly fine. The first time i noticed them not working was yesterday.
They work perfectly fine when i'm using VMWare Player too. I listen to an American radio station through it (VMWare Player).
Tried to open an mp3 file in my 'normal' PC (whatever you call it? Local PC? Host PC?) & it was playing, but without any sound through the speakers.
I go to Control Panel>Sounds>Sound tab & click one of the test sounds & they work perfectly fine.
I try other mp3 files & they don't work either. Copy one of the mp3 files to the VM to play it & it works perfectly fine.
Ideas?

You need to look at volume or mute settings in your default mp3 player, whatever that may be - Windows Media Player?
Or try various mp3 files in case the one you're playing is corrupt.0 -

Embarrassing
. The volume slider was up full, however i hadn't noticed the icon next to it said it was on mute.
I never asked this question. Nothing to see here, move along.....0
