HI I have zafira 2002 petrol 1.8 that I bought a while ago. when cold start, the engine revs up and down for half a minute and then settles down. I changed the Air flow meter and worked ok than last month it started again so i changed the Air flow meter and earthed it as i was told and everything was good all working ok but now it as started again when the engine is cold as anyone got any ideas what it could be please. Ive got no management light on just revs up and down and cant move for nearly a minute

Thank you

What happens if you do drive off straight away?
  • I cant drive straight of from cold the revs go up and down and when i put my foot on the accelarator the engine nearly cuts out
  • Check for air leaks.

There can be a number of faults which relate to the erratic idle. You've looked at the Air Flow Meter. You might need a tech to check on any fault codes. It may be anything from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve to the Electronic Throttle.

I've found that on Zafiras sometimes an engine/fault light won't be illuminated until the fault has existed for a while (or as normally happens on a Zafira it will light when a budgie farts nearby).

    Egr valve wants cleaning out
  • Throttle bodies common on these, is it the z18xe engine, fly by wire? Get it tech 2'd at main dealer, about £60 but at least you will know what it is.

Take the big air pipe off and clean the butterfly valve on the throttle with carb cleaner, if it can not close because it is gunked up it jumps open and tries again.
Once the engine warms up it does not need to fully close, so runs normally.

    Be happy...;)
