daughter has to be late for school because of my appointment at job centre

I have asked for an appointment to close my claim but the only appointment they had was at 9 am i have a 6 yr old that i have to drive to school so this clashes with my appointment. I told them this and they said its the only time available. Surely this shouldnt be allowed. Is there anything i can do about this please???

You can telephone to close your claim. There should be a number on your agreement form.

School always used to be open a bit earlier than the official start time and I know lots of parents used to drop their kids off and they'd have time to play until school. Is there any reason you can't do that?

Otherwise can a school friends mother look after her and take her to school with her friend? Drop the kid of at the friends and go to the appointment.

If the jobcentre won't change the appointment you are going to need to find someway to do both as far as I can see.

We just fill the book in and hand it in when passing. Never ever needed an appointment

If you are not available for work at 9am have you told the jobcentre? If you get a job that starts at 8.45 how will you cover the school run?

These appointments are given at the jobcentre's convenience not the claimants, they might have moved it but expect questions on whether you are available for work and therefore entitled to JSA.
    Edited to add

If you are closing the claim do you have to go in or would a call or letter suffice?

To be fair you can't expect them to rearrange all their appointments to suit you.
Just let the school known in advance, at 6 missing a couple of hours school isn't going to have any lasting effect.
Alternatively, isn't there anyone you could ask to take her?

  • why are you closing your claim?
If you are starting work there should be An in to work telephone number. If you are closing your claim for any other reason you can send your book in. Unless you are signing on and then closing your claim then they is no reason you have to attend. Is it your signing day tomorrow?

you do NOT need an appointment to close a claim for JSA at all. Fill in the booklet and drop it off or do it by phone - easy!!!

Don't know if things have changed in the last three or so years.

All I did when I got a job and wished to sign off was complete what I recall was the last page of my little booklet and sent it back to them in the post. I didn't hear anything further from them.

Ask to speak to a supervisor. They have plenty of staff available to deal with odd quirks like this, whoever you spoke to is simply not wanting the bother of dealing with it.

Ring back, make a point and be stubborn about it. They will give in.
