EU Airline compensation claims are a massive scam

Just look at how cunning these vultures are:

I have to use Ryanair for work regularly and this is only making fares get more expensive for me. If a flight is delayed due to bad weather, the airline should simply provide someone with a Boots/McDonalds meal deal, passengers shouldn't be given a choice.
Hopefully one they, someone will sue them back!

Your link points to a BBC news article dated July 2010 last updated after you posted.
You are not clear what your point is. Are you complaining about the EU ruling in favour of the passengers, the passengers claiming for lobster dinners or the airlines?
Who are the vultures? How are the claims a scam? Who should sue who?

I think the point is that if a flight is significantly delayed due to something with the control of the airline such as mechanical problems then they should pay compensation which they are wriggling and trying to avoid. If it is outside their control then what they have to do is more limited but I don't think a Big Mac and Fries is all that suitable for a 12 hour delay (or even for a 12 minute delay).0 -
You wouldn't mind then having a wonderful holiday, then being dumped at the airport, only to discover your flight is delayed and no-one knows when it will take off because it keeps being changed, you can't get through to the travel agent (who are also the airline) and keep holding on the phone, but luckily one passenger has the rep's mobile number, whereupon you are promised food, drink and a visit from the rep, only to get just a bottle of soft drink, sandwich and crisps, and still no information as to when you will take off, which happens 8 hours later than scheduled so you eventually make it home at midnight!!0

I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

I'm no fan of Ryanair, but I actually have some sympathy for the airlines, when the delays/cancellations are out of their control.
I do think it is unfair for them to be expected to pay out thousands and thousands in providing hotels and food/drink for people who are affected by such delays.
A lot of the issue is also, because peoples travel insurance don't cover these sort of delays either.
Ultimately the customer will pay, in increased fares to cover the costs.0 -

Well newsflash people out of the work can't really afford McDonalds. If people want lobster and caviar pay it for yourself, don't expect the travelling public to do so!
- If people are out of work and can't afford MacDonald's then what are they doing on an aircraft?
- If you read the article it said the lobster meals claim was only amongst the claims, not that the claim had been paid. According to the express link, the EU ruling was that only reasonable costs need to be paid out.
- Caviar was not mentioned

Quite an irrational response. If there is a delay and it is the airlines fault then they should compensate for delay. If it is unavoidable by them e.g. closure of the airport due to adverse weather then they have fewer responsibilities. If they get into a significant but not overnight delay providing some cash or a voucher which you can spend either on a Big Mac or perhaps £5.75 off the caviar seems reasonable.
Instead of sticking to what the airline might do in given circumstances you want to have a rant about your image of toffs requiring lobster and/or caviar whereas the majority of air travellers are penniless unemployed who having paid their fare cannot afford a cheeseburger. I'd take another pill if I were you.0
