Would you go back and work for a previous employer?

I took redundancy in 2010 and have worked part time(through choice) since but I am a bit bored at times and would like to go back to full time until I reach 60 - 7 years time.
My previous employer(was Northern Rock and is now Virgin Money) is advertising a couple of vacancies that I am interested in.
Would I be mad to consider going back there?
If you were in my position what would your thoughts be?

Thanks

I worked at a place last year, in the call centre section of the business. Hated every minute of it and left after just 2 and half weeks to work for M&S. Out of the blue a few weeks ago the old place called me and asked if i wanted a job in a different section. It was full time whereas at M&S my hours had been reduced to 8/week, so not only was money going to be tight, I was bored like you.

The place I left was great, full of great people, it was just the job that was awful. Now I'm doing something different it's a whole other world and I'm glad I went back, I'm enjoying myself.

Only you can make the decision. Was it a good place? Good people? Did you enjoy it? If you answered no to all those, I'd be inclined to say you'd be mad to go back but you're considering it so it can't be all bad.
  • There are a couple of past employers who I would go back to like a shot if they asked me. All of the others can go boil their heads because I left for very good reasons.

The employer you are considering is not the same organisation which you left in 2010. But if you don't mind taking a chance and would be happy to ditch your current p/t work, just apply and go to the interview if invited. You don't have anything to lose at this point.

I have gone back to previous employers several times (originally leaving because of university/work placements).

As long as you left on good terms and enjoyed your time there overall then I think that it's a good thing to do.

    Nope!

I've worked for some of the worst employers you could find and I'd not go back to any of them. Actually there is one exception to that list..

I did a job last year for a couple of months which although paid less than the NMW on a good day, was enjoyable and I did get on with the boss very well - lovely lady. I left due to personal reasons but did actually ring them and ask to go back a month or two back. They said yes but the game had changed and it would require me to find £500 to get all my paperwork etc in order to get back in. For a job that pays less than the NMW thats crazy talk. I did enjoy the job though as I was always meeting new people and having a laugh which considering all my other jobs that have put me through hell, was great when you think about it but just a shame about the money. I had a couple of shifts where I didn't even earn my fuel money to get there and back :(

Never go back that's what I have learnt.

Thanks thats really good advice - it was it a good place until the run on the bank, the people were great , and for the most part I did enjoy it.I have a few working years left and just feel I need to make the most of them.

I do go back to employers, but I do contract work, so it's inevitable!

But I would have gone back to old employers if I enjoyed working there before I started in my current industry.

Was there anything in the redundancy documentation which would prevent you returning within a given period of time?

I'm on my third stint with the same employer, having been made redundant (actually volunteered) twice. They are a great employer and I've been very happy there. I've been lucky and have worked for some of the nicest people.

This could all be about to change though as my lovely boss moved on within the organisation and will be based in the US so I've got a new boss to get used to this week.

I know quite a few people over the years who have left only to return a short time later.

ETA: Forgot to answer the question but I'm sure you've guessed if I were you I wouldn't hesitate.
