Non-motoring conviction & car insurance

My husband was recently convicted of common assault & now I'm having problems trying to find someone to insure him as named driver on my policy. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

Try Adrian Flux - search google and i am sure their website will be on there. As far as i know they have scheme for such cases.

I don't think there should be any need to resort to such a specialised scheme in this case. Many motor insurers make it clear that they are only interested in motoring convictions. Others, eg MoreThan, ask only about convictions for fraud or dishonesty. From MoreThan's eligibility criteria:

"Have not been convicted of (or have prosecutions pending for) fraud or dishonesty of any kind"

When getting quotes, check carefully what convictions the insurer requires you to disclose and if it is not clear, ask them. If an insurer limits its enquiry to certain types of conviction, you are under no obligation to disclose other types.

I believe the Confused.com questionnaire asks about all criminal convictions and their system will weed out those insurers who cannot quote for drivers with convictions, so that is a good place to start your search.

Whilst there should be no difficulty in finding a suitable mainstream motor insurer, I fear that home insurance may be more of a problem and you should start by checking immediately whether you need to disclose the conviction to your existing home insurer. It is in the case of home insurance that you may need to go to a specialist broker operating a scheme for people with criminal convictions.
