You must know your partner well by now, and you state that she never wears jewellery, therefore I would imagine that she would prefer something plain, but beautiful, without being ornate. Am I right? That should give you a lot of scope, if you confirm that with her. Many men buy something that is too ornate for the potential fiancee's taste, simply because it looks expensive, even if it is not. After a few months, it begins to look tawdry.

I made that mistake many years ago, after being with someone for 4 years. After some more years, and another failed relationship, I had developed a better "eye" and gave my GF a beautifully simple but expensive ring, which was stunning on her finger. She loved it. 24 years later, she still loves it. Any jewellery I have ever bought, is the same or in similar taste. Not ornate, but plainly beautiful.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

    Thank you all!

Im still looking, once ive done the deed and im going with the token ring route so we can shop together and she can get a ring she likes, rather then me guess as i dont even know her ring size as she doesnt have any!

Has anybody any experience of shopping online? Ive found a website called DiamondGeezers (the name did put me off at first) but it seems to have good reviews? And i could probably get to their store.
There just seems to be a lot more choice online, however haggling seems to be out of the question.

I didn't order mine online but I used a company with an online site called Cool Diamonds (google it). It was a few years ago but they also had an office in Hatton Garden (not a shop) and I arranged to go in and look at the diamonds. I had an idea of price before I went and they showed me a selection of diamonds so I could choose the one that my ring was made with. 8 years later I still love my ring and haven't seen anyone else with one similar (it has pink sapphires too).

I've just looked at their website and they now have a showroom in Hatton Garden and the website has .4 ct rings for 1k if you play around with colour etc
  • I was in Goldsmiths yesterday buying a wedding present and they had a deal on a few engagement rings in time for Valentines Day. There was a couple looking at this one and it is absolutely stunning and beautifully packaged. I thought it was brilliant value, especially for a usually expensive shop:

Don't suppose you have any Tesco vouchers? You could treble them up and get it for £330!!

I gave you the link to Diamondgeezers in my post #5.

I've not used them but their website is pretty good for information about diamonds.
As I wrote earlier, you can also play about with the diamond search to see the difference in cost between different colours/clarity/cut/carat.

What about a nice day/weekend trip to brighton there are loads of reputable unique jewellers (some specialised in antiques) in the lanes and around. The prices are reasonable too at most of them.

My ring was bought from Rox - a highstreet store, for around £650 I think (full price was just short of £900 so some haggling must have been done by OH!) so I'm afraid I don't know much about how to haggle in high street stores but I know it can be done.

    Mine is a white gold (18ct) with a .5ct diamond (I think!)

Thank you to everybdy who has replied, everyone has given me lots to think about.

Pollycat, my apologies in regards to the DiamondGeezer link, i knew there was a reason i went on the site.

It seems we dont have to get the ring immediatley so i think taking in all the suggestions above will be usefull with plenty of shopping around!

    Thank you all.

    Does it really matter?

Im just getting my engagement ring now after 19 years of marriage to the same man. There are so many other things you can use that money for.

My MIL is now very well off but still wears her ring with it's minuscule diamond bought from a cheap jewellers. Get some perspective and let her come with you to choose within your budget.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

    No need for apologies. :)

I think it's a really good website - but please note that I've never bought anything from there - I usually give the link when people on the Goa Tripadvisor website are asking about buying diamonds there.

I've never compared the prices to other online diamond websites, this is also a popular one: http://www.bluenile.com/uk/

but the descriptions seem pretty good.

I actually remember that the guy from Diamondgeezers (I agree - awful name) appeared on Dragons' Den years ago, had an offer but then declined it.

    Good luck with the ring.
I've had my .75 carat solitaire (bought second-hand and remounted) for 25 years and still love it.
