Travel insurance for possessions/valuables

Options
Hello. Most travel insurance policies will pay out a maximum of approx 250ukp for single items, if any possessions or valuables of yours get lost or stolen. In this day and age, this is woefully inadequate. How can I best insure all my expensive gear when I go abroad? I'm interested in electronics and jewellery, single items of which may be worth between 250ukp and, lets say, 3000ukp.

Thanks.

-D.

One way is to have it on your house insurance and then take out a travel insurance policy WITHOUT personal possessions cover (you don't want or need to be insured twice).

Most household contents policies that coevr "personal possessions" would normally give a £3K limit on personal possessions.

I believe that "egg" travel insurance allows you to exclude personal possessions on their travel insurance.

As well as not wanting to pay twice you shouldn't be insured twice because in the event of an incident there could be a battle between the 2 companies about who pays. At best it could mean delays in a payout.

I find that house contents insurance is usually the cheapest way to do it.

Generally speaking, electronics such as ipods, laptops, portable dvd players, nintendos, etc or similar derivitives would be classed as valuables with a single article limit. (same with Jewellery - precious or semi precious stones..etc.). Check your home insurance policy if they're covered outside your house/country of residence/whilst abroad and if not, best to get them seperately insured with a specialist policy. Care should be taken here not all home contents insurance covers items out side of the UK.

You should check to see that items are covered world wide and for what period of time.

Another point is that making a claim on house insurance will greatly increase your next renewal.

I do the following take out house insurance without cover for items outside of the home cheaper that way at £40000 cover for £118 a year then I take out a yearly travel insurance to cover the EEC which covers all personal items family cover £92.80.

I took a day trip to York last year and lost my fuji camera I contacted the travel insurance who paid for a replacement as I was from home be it only on a day trip.
