Was just wondering if you could post these through a normal postbox with regular stamps on and retain the reference number for tracking etc.

??? For you to use a postbox or the letterbox at the delivery address?

As far as im aware you need the postoffice to stamp your form or give you the receipt to get the tracking info.

Not quite sure what your asking??

If you drop it in a postbox you have no tracking.

  • Recorded you can, however Special Delivery is kept separate when collected from companies and other Post Offices.

Sorry, I mean't can these be posted through a Royal Mail postbox and if so would they be treated as normal for tracking and compensation.

No, they need to be registered through Royal Mail, they won't track them if they just go in a postbox.

Also of course, and recorded in particular, if it isn't delivered then there is no proof of delivery and no proof of postage either to enable a claim for loss to be made.

Last year I posted on here about a special delivery that had gone astray (and thank you to custardy for assisting me with that). It turned out that for some reason it was never logged into the system at the accepting mail centre, so I had a receipt that was stamped properly and nothing at all online. It wasn't until day 3 when it was delivered and luckily the postman got a signature that anything changed online. Until late on day 3 though the tracking number showed as not in the system at all .

Where would you be getting the proof you sent the item?

You would have the tracking number and a signature (hopefully) at some point, but I agree the risk is if something goes wrong you can't prove you actually sent anything. It was just an idea, but having thought through it, not a good one.
