Hi all
I've been asked to have a look at a friends laptop as it had the Metropolitan Polica ransomware on it.
I think I've removed all of that but I'd like someone to have a look at a HJT log to confirm.
It's also running very slow (Vista with 1GB RAM) so I'd appreciate some advice as to what I can switch off.
HJT log is here:-

As a quick add-on, I've just installed SP2 for Vista.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Vista is going to run slow on 1GB even when the system is clean. Really needs an upgrade to 2GB.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Uninstall the Google Toolbar, and the related junk that come with Google. If the sidebar isn't used, disable that. Same for Skype and Apple software too - if they aren't needed, uninstall them.
Is Flash up-to-date, or has it been updated recently? There's an entire that tells me it may have been updated recently and will finalise changes at the next reboot. Or it could be a persistent entry pointing to spyware.
A run of CCleaner might help to get rid of any unneccessary files. A quick scan with Malwarebytes won't hurt.
I would check all drivers are up-to-date, as new drivers may iron out any small inefficencies and bugs that are present in older drivers. The same goes for software - and small utilities are present to help you check quickly. Finally it doesn't hurt to install (where suitable) recommended and important Windows Updates.0 -

I recently fixed a slow-running problem on my XP-driven laptop, this may help your Vista machine also. I notice in your log the system process: wuauclt.exe is running. This causes a major issue for my (and other) machines, but there is a way to kill it.
1. Before enabling the Internet, Open Task Manager and click on the Processes Tab.
2. Click on the Image Name heading to sort the processes by name in reverse order, so that the w
processes are visible.
3. Now enable your internet connection. Watch the Task Manager until wuauclt.exe starts up.
4. Immediately click on it to select, then use the End Process button to kill it. You may have to repeat this 2 or 3 times until it gives up and goes away.
Now try using your machine normally. It should soon settle down to a normal operating speed. You have to enact this procedure once a day, in my experience.
wuauclt.exe is a Microsoft Update tool which almost paralyses some XP machines. If you want more info, try a web search with the filename. There's a world of pain out there !
Good luck.0 -
You are not short of toolbars, are you
This gave me trouble in the past

you could try this, as it works very well - thanks wadder_8Lets see if there's anything obvious.
Post me a DDS log - should take 2-3 minutes.
Download DDS from the link below and save it to your desktop:
Link
After you've downloaded it and saved it to your desktop:- Double click DDS to run it.
- When it's finished, DDS will open two logs:
- DDS.txt
- Attach.txt
