    Very helpful post.

Ref my bold above, which poster is that? Are you referring to 1 and 1? What is the risk here? I don't understand who how and why one would have to pay several thousands. Paying for what, exactly and when?

Also I'd be grateful if you could please clear up my confusion about contact details being visible on 'whois'. With your domain service, do you charge to keep these details withheld? Are they truly withheld?
    Thanks!
The reason people don't move right down inside the carriage is that there's nothing to hold onto when you're in the middle.

I don't want to kick off any argument tbh. If someone is a Pro Reseller, they just have the ability to alter their prices and if they are lucky, they have joined the UK.membership of Nominet. This only give access to their own account, not to the systems. For argument sake resellers get charged £10 for moving .uk extensions. global domain firms don't have that charge and can transfer domains by just moving stuff around.

If you want true and real private registration, you must go for complete Protected Private Domain registration.

Let’s say your credit card expires and you forget to update your account with the new one. Or you change your email address. Or maybe you just forget to renew your domain. In the blink of an eye, a social engineer or someone watching the expiry date could transfer your domain name away without your permission.

When the domain name goes, your website, email account - everything – goes with it!

A protected domain allows you to protect yourself: Apply Protected Registration to your most important domain names. Should your registration expire for any reason, protected domains will be safe for up to 12 months. No one else can step in and steal them away from you.

Protected Registration is packed with the safeguards and security you need:
    • Expiration Protection avoids loss of domain ownership due to credit card expiration, failed billing, outdated contact information – even simple forgetfulness!
    • Deadbolt Transfer Protection makes it impossible for MOST transfers to occur – whether inadvertent, accidental or malicious.
    • Ownership Protection, a quarterly email updates help you keep an eye on your domain status.
    • As a special bonus, Protected Registration includes both Private and Business Registration to keep your personal information hidden while publishing your business info in the WhoIs database!

You don't want to hide your business, as WHOIS is one way to verify a business. Hopefully you can see why you don't want to wipe all info.

One key thing with domain names - is try to buy mis-spelt ones (especially if you domain has the same letter appearing in succession - for example bosssimple.com could be typed by the visitor as bossimple.com / bosimple.com etc. - and of course .co.uk)

If you don't buy the mispelt ones and your site becomes popular, the other party who would have bought the mispelt version would be receiving your "mistyped" emails and would probably ask for a nice sum to sell it to you.

Personal experience - was asked buy the seller of a mispelt name for a tidy sum of £5000. I did ignore them - fortunately they forgot to renew their domain!:T
  • i use 123 reg for .co.uk and if i am after .com i shop around. There was a time when Godaddy didn't charge VAT, im not sure if they do now, it made buying domains from them cheaper than buying form 123 reg.

I used 1 and 1 and found them to be awkward.

I think this is bad advice, i've seen pages and pages of decent mis-spells not getting offers.

It i probably one of the biggest wastes of money hoping you will sell them on.

I recommend names.co.uk for hosting and domain registration. British-based, unlike godaddy and others ...

Buy cheap and pay later. Its your choice! domains should cost no more than £8. Hosting for a year should cost no more than £19.95, SSL should cost £5, Dedicated email should cost around £14.95.

That's what I charge and I work on a 20% margin which is cheap.
