I really think that councils should thoroughly investigate exactly where the money is coming from when tenants exercise their right to buy. Especially with the elderly who are unlikely to get a mortgage. I for one am sick of these greedy relatives like the op picking over these limited resources. It is not an opportunity for you to score a fast buck, it is an increasingly rare public resource that is much needed.
It is an abuse of the system op to even think of this, buy a house on the open market like everyone else and leave your Grandad in peace.0 -

We bought our Mum and Dads Council House which made it a lot more comfortable and cheaper to run. It had cheap windows, they were all replaced with top grade double glazing, the heating system was so outdated and it cost a fortune to run, replaced with all new C/H and boiler with additional radiators that the Council didn't seem to think they needed ie. no radiator in the Hallway, no radiator in the bathroom. we had a walk in Disabled shower fitted in the Bathroom because my Mum couldn't get in the Bath (the council wanted to put one in the front Lounge? So she didn't have to climb the stairs). We also had a stairlift fitted.....all of these things were done to make our parents quality of life better.....yes we did get the money when it was sold but we had spent a fortune keeping our parents in the Home they loved.
Oh, and by the way, my Parents did get a Council Bungalow when my Mum could no longer use the Stairlift, but the same happened again..... No shower in the Bathroom so up to us to sort that out again
