Got Virgin BB in October last year and signed up for(up to) 60 Meg. Since then i very very very rarely (on 2 occasions) get even close to 60meg.
Just now im about 43.6meg.
It is a wired connection. Called the helpdesk several times and today was the last straw an hour and a half later and its still not resolved. Even an engineer has been out and cannot do anything.
What else can i do?

43.6mbps on an up to 60mbps connection is good. Most would be very happy with that service.0

over utilisation in your area most likely(they wont tell you that though). Could also be your lines power levels0

The 60meg is purely the speed of the link between your house and the "head end" which is your entry point into Virgin Media's network.
From there, VM's network may be slower and parts of the internet may be slower still. The actual speed you will get will be the slowest of all the various parts in the chain between your PC and wherever it is you are downloading from.
For an extreme example, if you were using an instant messaging program to download a file directly from my PC, and I happened to be connected to the internet via dial-up modem, that file transfer would go at the speed of my dial-up modem as I would be unable to send it to you any faster than that.0 -
Actually probably the majority on cable do see pretty much the speed they were sold most of the time although a significant minority experience dreadful performance usually due to local congestion although VM are also well known for running their peeering links so hot the fibre almost melts.43.6mbps on an up to 60mbps connection is good. Most would be very happy with that service.
As custardy pointed out ome of the Speedtest.net servers can't handle the speeds you get on cable either. This is my own 60/3 connection this evening...
It is normally around that sort of performance although a year or so back it was so dreadful I downgraded to 10Mbps for several months.0
