I'd complain, after all they processed a transaction on a cancelled card. You were left without use of the money for the weekend, A complaint might spur them to improve their systems (better still, if they trust AA transactions a lot less.)

I'd also be making a complaint to the AA.

BTW, thanks for updating us, it's always helpful.

The transaction would have been processed via the VAU.

I suspect at some point point in the past 18 months they have given the AA their card details for something and now they have claimed a payment for what ever reason.

It would be in the OPs best interest to contact the AA for more information just in case they intend to claim any further payments in the future.

P.S. Even with the free AA cover, I have always followed up receipt of a joining pack with a letter cancelling any recurring authority they may think is in place as I think recurring authority is iniquitous.

Their is a possibility the AA are not in receipt of this letter or has not actioned your request and the recurring authority had been put in place.

It may be worth contacting them for more information:

Complaint on lack of funds. Yes.

Complaint on card, not going anywhere. Due to VAU and fact it will be a CPA if its the AA.

    Complaint to AA... YES....

OP have you taken out AA home ins ?
As they now give breakdown FREE.... But you have to remember to call and cancel. They do set up a DD to take payment and most people think cancelling this is cancelling the agreement. Sadly not as they will just default to card details.

Home ins from AA. Just basic was £22 and this included car breakdown cover.... I also got £19 cashback from quidco :rotfl:
    WINNER :D

I am with pmduk ref the complaints to raise (in writing).

Glad you got the clarification, TiddlyPom, and I hope your money is back in your account by 6 pm. If not, add it straight to your complaint about a broken promise / dishonest staff.

Interested in hearing what the AA have to say for themselves!

So where have Natwest made an error? It's clear the OP has set up a recurring payment with the aa then forgot about it. The aa just don't happen to just get someone's card details.

I make a point of ALWAYS cancelling any recurring payment authority. It is not something I have forgotten to do and I always keep copies of the letter I send cancelling.
As I said, there are two possible scenarios, AA got the card details from insurer or someone else took out cover using my card - that could be breakdown cover or anything that the AA sell.
Since I moved here 18 months ago, a recurring payment authority would surely have been triggered at a 12 month anniversary and I have received no correspondence regarding this.

I will certainly be onto the AA as soon as the bank can give me some kind of reference that was used to take this payment. Until then, it's a little difficult to do as it would take soome rooting round to find the old expired card number.

Or the third you had given them your card details in the past.
