Bus Lane Fine

I drove in a bus lane a few days ago and only realised when it was too late. I'm expecting to be fined as it has cameras down there but I drive a vehicle registered in Spain so it will be months until I get there to check the post.

Can I ring up the council or someone to find out whether I have any tickets? Also is it just a fine or points as well?

  • There's always a chance that they will see Spain and give up, you might be lucky.

    Normally just a fine. I would just wait. The PCN (if there is one) will be sent to the RK. If that isn't you then don't worry about it until you get some sort of notice (or the PCN itself). You would have a defence if you don't get the PCN within 14 days of the offence.

    Was the Bus Lane an "Anytime" bus lane or does it have times shown on it?

    So if the vehicle is registered in Spain it will be on Spanish plates. Somehow I doubt that the council has access to the Spanish equivalent of out DVLA1

    It was right outside the bus station and didn't have any times displayed.

    Although given the ease with which names and addresses are obtained from the DVLA by pretty much anyone who asks for them perhaps the same is true in Spain.

    Of course, in another 3 months the vehicle will be required to be re-registered in the UK unless the owner has previously applied for customs relief.

    Two things will be needed;
    an operator who was monitoring the camera at the time
    a legally compliant PCN - sending these is beyond the skills of many authorities so if you receive a PCN, get it checked out on a website such as pepipoo to see if there is any reasonable doubt, either of the validity of the doc or the validity of the bus lane

    there are also a limited set of circumstances which allow you to drive in a bus lane, so check these out too

    There's a stretch of road in my town with cameras and bus lanes. I drove in the bus lane before christmas and have'nt heard a thing. I'm either lucky or they are used to monitor something else
