This is a sad story, although I cannot understand all the details. Can you not make things up somehow, even if you have to swallow your pride. I guess it was a bit harsh that you found out via photos on facebook but what is done is done.

Perhaps write letters(ie don't send them or keep copies) or keep a journal or something for them. I get the impression you are not rich and I am not sure that receiving money from a relative you have never meet will mean much or buy much affection.

I believe you meant this in the most sincere and polite way.

but the 'buying affection' was cruel and unwarrented even if unintended.

No, you don't know all the details, so just leave it there. And the last thing I expect or hope for is that doing this will 'buy much affection'. That's not why.

    Yes, DH knows.

I'm glad you decided to tell him, secrets are potentially so damaging to a relationship. My husband and I don't always see things the same but I would rather have the disagreement out of the way than let it all build up.

Yes, I thought it was. Hurtful and completely misunderstanding of my reasons for doing this.

It turned out to be very simple and straightforward in the end, and that was all that I really wanted to know. Thanks to everyone for positive and helpful suggestions.

I apologise for my poor use of language, no offense intended.

You are correct. On reflection I should have selected my words better.

Just happened on this article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/investing/article-2274059/How-DIY-investor-build-stock-market-fortune.html#axzz2K6sjzDSu

The basic information in it is not new, and yes, it's possible. My savings have built up over the last 10 years in this manner. What would help, however, would be having more time. Which, again, is a good reason for starting off savings for the very young at the earliest possible age and leaving them invested for the longest possible time.

Margaret, my good opinion once lost, is lost forever (if you keep quoting from the Daily mail lol!)

    Appologies to JA ;-)

    Sorry, sorry!

This is not new information. I knew about this - and not from the DM - many years ago. I wasn't able to act on it at the time, but have done since.

Amazing how this type of information surfaces yet again now the FTSE is on an upward trend. The time to have bought into it was when everyone else was panicking and it was possible to buy more units for less. However, over a long period of time the peaks and troughs get evened out.
