Cheapest way to keep Vodafone PAYG SIM card active

I have a Vodafone SIM card with a small balance on it that I use for data roaming on networks where this is advantageous (e.g. on board aircraft), although I use local SIM cards everywhere else.

In order to keep it active, I understand that I need to incur chargeable use every six months. What is the cheapest way of doing this while in the UK? The cheapest chargeable use while roaming seems cheaper than in the UK (e.g. an incoming roaming call of one second or sending a text). I want to minimise these deductions, particularly when my balance is just above a round number of pounds that would pay for a day's data roaming at £2 or £5.

If you can't afford 25p for a bried call every six months I feel extremely sorry for you.

I've already explained this point. It's not a question of "affording 25p". If the balance is £5.10, then a 25p call will bring the balance down to £4.85, necessitating a top-up of another £5, not 25p, in order to enjoy a day's non-EU data roaming.

I have SIM cards from lots of countries, and it always makes sense to use the smallest possible deduction in order to keep them all active. If you think this is about "affording 25p", you've totally missed the point.
