Black screen on laptop

Hi all

Hoping someone can help me. My son has just given me his laptop as it has a black screen. There is power as the light is on - but nothing else is happening. Any ideas on where to start please :D

thanks

The most likely cause is a GPU related issue, what is the make/model of the laptop?

If it is the GPU then either a 'reflow' will make it work until it gets too hot again, but likely a new laptop is in order.

One thing you can check is, if the screen is broken is to plug it into a TV, if you can get the TV to show the picture then the GPU is fine but the screen/screen inverter is likely the fault, if the screen is the fault then it's fixable at a lower cost.

A make and model would be helpful for us to figure it out.

It's a Dell Inspiron N5040 if that's any help. Thx

When I booted it up I had the option of pressing F2 so I gather the screen is ok

hold down the power button for 10 seconds, if that doesn't work, boot, press F8, try safemode

If the hardware is working (because you can see the option to press F2), and assuming it was working before, then I'd be wondering what had changed. Has your son recently installed any software or anything of that sort?
