My Experience With Windows 8

^^^ Windows Defender (in Win8) is basically MSE with a new name and built into the OS. There is a little more to it than that, but this is the summary version

There's nothing "wrong" with it per-se. It's not going to crash your system and delete your important documents, you need to install McAfee if you want that, it's just that it's detection rates aren't as good as they were a few years ago, so more stuff slips through.Says who?
AVG Anti-virus Free 2013 came out better for protection than any other free a/v tested by Av-Test.org in November/December.
And yet the most recent AV-Comparatives.org test gives AVG a score of 1 star or "standard", out of a maximum of 3, putting it only one grade above the likes of McAfee which, predictably, gets the lowest rating possible.0 -
Hmm I suspect it is supposed to be the fastest version. But for testing, if you can get the manual option to work, it might be more use (although you'd want to remember to switch it back to one of the automatic options when you were done testing).Oh I do remember now being at that page when I set it all up and chose "as items arrive" thinking that would be fastest.0 -

I tried Start Menu X, but it behaved a bit erratically and then crashed.
So I uninstalled it.0 -
I wonder if I should start a new thread?
I know it's probably me causing the issues but I don't know how to fix.
This new windows 8 suddenly this afternoon couldn't find wifi connections until I used a troubleshooter. I'm now back on wireless but nervous. I think the problems are due to trying to connect a print/copy/scanner wirelessly. Too much of a coincidence otherwise.
There is only one printer in the house and yet it has different names on different devices. Most say offline when it is on.
i tried scanning a document and couldn't see where the scan was. eventually found it had saved on a different machine ( wirelessly).
How do I go about undoing the mess and starting again?
I just want all devices to be able to print wirelessly and dictate which machine scans are sent to.
Very confused.0 -
Wireless printers are a pain in the backside. Far easier to use a cable if you happen to keep it somewhere near your router.
First thing I'd do would be to give the printer a static IP address. You can do this on your router though the method varies depending on what router it is.
Then I'd just delete all the printer entries from your computers and start again.0 -
Yes the printer is quite close to the router. Are you saying connect the printer to the router ( which has 4 ethernet slots) with an ethernet cable?
I don't know how to assign a static IP address. I was aware that nothing was static as whenever a device is switched on again, it had a newIP address.0 -
If you can connect it easily enough with an ethernet cable, it removes one possible point of failure.
As for assigning a static IP, you can either assign it on the printer (giving it a fixed IP address outside the range that the router assigns dynamically) or on the router (telling the router to always assign the same IP to the printer, when the printer requests a dynamic IP)
Both cases will need you to look at how the router is set up, so the second option is probably the easiest. It's still different on every router so you'll need to read the manual sorry.0 -
I've just got a new laptop with Windows 8 and I am completely defeated by it ... I have no idea how to find anything, is there an online tutorial? I'm completely non-tekky, I dont have any apps on my phone, I only do word processing and surf the net on my laptop, and I'm finding Windows 8 very hard to navigate0
