I am posting this in both the Insurance and Motoring forums

I have read previous threads on this, but would like some clarification.

I have had car insurance with Aviva for the past 2 years and my renewal is due in a couple of weeks. I am considering staying with Aviva, but as a new customer rather than a renewal. They only provide proof of NCD for 5 years max. I have been driving claim free for 13 years.

I have read on here that having more than 5 years makes little difference to the premium. Last night used a comparison site and got quotes with both 5 years and 7 years NCD. It made very little difference with some companies, but £30-50 difference with others. I appreciate this is not a huge amount, but this is MSE and every little helps. We also have 2 cars due for renewal this month so the saving would be doubled as we have identical claims history. I shall be checking to see if 13 years claim free makes an even bigger difference.

I am now keen to have proof of the actual number of claim free years if possible. I shall be checking my paperwork to see how far back I have proof of NCD.

I have emailed all the companies I have been with since 2007 asking them to confirm the NCD I had when I joined them or at renewal. The company I joined in 2007 have confirmed by email that I had 7 years at inception and will be issuing a letter to confirm this.

Even if I manage to get replies from all of the companies going back to 2007 confirming I have never claimed, would the usual 2 year validity of NCD still apply? Is there any point getting proof older than 2 years?

Prior to moving to Aviva in 2011 I was with CIS in 2010 and Aviva in 2009. Aviva would have given me proof of 5 years NCD at the end of the policy in 2010. CIS are sending out a letter confirming I had 6 years NCD at the end of the policy in 2011 when I moved to Aviva.

Would Aviva have to accept that I have 8 years NCD as they already know I haven’t claimed while with them?

Is it possible to prove, and have accepted, the full number of years NCD I have?

  • I found this exact thing out yesterday !! I switched from Swinton to Aviva 2 years ago and had 7 years no claims then - and have been with Aviva 2 years, so now have 9.

I rang Aviva to haggle over the renewal - didnt make much difference - so then said could they confirm my amount of no claims etc and she started saying exactly this - that their maximum was 5 years and they could only guarantee the 2 years on top of that as I've been claim free with them !!

This is so unfair ! On some sites - the difference between 7 years and 9 years makes a difference, not a lot but some !

I rang Swinton to see if they could provide me with proof of the original no claims - which they could ? but that would only give me the same 7 than I have with Aviva as they said they couldnt say what had happened since, logically.

Follow this up with aviva - they can help if they want to! (Or can be bothered!). Speak to their CS dept, and get someone who understands your issue!

If you provided them originally with the proof of 7 years, then ask them to confirm you now have 9.

If you didn't need to originally provide proof, then send it to them now (they have a dedicated email for this: ncdvald@aviva.co.uk )

They will send your updated proof after your policy lapses.

I have submitted a request for proof of my full NCD today. I received the following reply:
    Hi
Thank you for your email. Unfortunately we are unable to send you proof of No Claims Discount until the policy is lapsed. Your policy is in force until 05/12/2014 and has not yet been cancelled, if you wish we can lapse the policy for you from your renewal date but I would need to know the reason you wish to cancel the policy as well.
I hope that helps and I look forward to hearing from you.
    Kind regards
    Dave

I do not think Aviva are being helpful as suggested by Stephanie Carrington, Aviva UK Social Support and are wrong for witholding the NCD proof until after the policy has lapsed. How else can a comparitive quote be obtained. I therefore have sent this reply:

    Dave
At present your renewal quote is excessive. I therefore wish to obtain a comparison quotation. You have not let me know the full extent of my NCD. You can however tell me what my NCD was up to my last renewal date. Bearing in mind I pay to have my NCD protected. I believe you are to state my NCD for renewal purposes and not when the policy has lapsed.
I trust you will now give me proof of my NCD, if not for this year, you can certainly tell me what it was last year before I renewed.

I refer you to statements made within your organisation by Stephanie Carrington, Aviva UK Social Support , that this information is available and readily given to your customers.

    I await your further advices

    Regards

I trust they will give a reasonable reply

Surely you know what your ncd was at the start of your policy.

No insurer can give you your categoric proof until the year is completed ( you may have a claim between now and the policy lapsing).

Any new insurer you approach for quotes will accept what you tell them for the purpose of quoting you.

You won't have to furnish the proof till your old policy has lapsed.
