Connecting Dell laptop to TV - help!

Hi, I've got a Dell 1525 which has HDMI output but when I connect it to our Sony 32" TV the image only fills a small (24"-ish)rectangle in the centre of the screen instead of the whole TV.
I think I must have to change the resolution but not sure how or whether it is on the laptop or TV?
Any help greatfully received, thanks.

Try restarting it first with the TV plugged in.
Then check the resolution settings. If you have graphics drivers with software installed, check in there about output to tv, otherwise just check the resolution on the laptop but restart it with the tv plugged in first.
Edited to add, if there is graphics software installed (along side the drivers) then you can usually set how you want it out put that way too. Like to TV only, mirror screens(tv and laptop) or two screens.0
