BT bill payment check. Is this a scam?

We had an automated call from "BT" this morning advising that our bill was overdue, and would we like to confirm that the bill was now paid.
My OH had a bit of a blonde moment and pressed the button to confirm that we had indeed paid the bill, and then obligingly entered our phone number :eek:

I am now expecting to see on my next bill that we have paid several hundred pounds into the account of a Nigerian businessman.

Somebody please tel me its not a scam:o

Even if a scam all they have is your phone no. (not much good to them when they must have had it to call you!)

Gustav,if you are concerned you can either call BT and get an automated read out of your current call charges over the phone so you will know if anything is amiss.Or ring and speak to someone there to confirm that it is common practice.Either way it will put your mind at rest before your next bill.

Looks like i'm just being paranoid (this time).
I have just checked our account on BT.com and we dont have any scary charges on there. :T

I do think its a bit of a daft for BT to be doing something like this, in view of all the scam warnings we hear about.

Be Alert - the country needs more lerts.

If you had a call from BT then why would they need your phone number? How did they call you in the first place?

Get the feeling it is a scam call , but only one to confirm that your phone no. is active . Expect loads of dodgy marketing calls to come ???!!!
