First time JSA Application-EEKKK

Hi there,
I am leaving a job today that was only a contract for two months, I am a freelancer in the media, and I have no job to go to yet, but I expect I wont be waiting long. I have been told to apply for JSA tonight. I rent privately and so I was going to apply for rent allowance also, however, the council think I am still at uni, as I was, until Jan when I left to pursue full-time work. I still have my degree, but just left without the honours year.
I am wondering what will happen if I apply for rent allowance, will i be back charged for the council tax discount? Or will they accept I left in Jan?

I have never claimed benefits in my 16 years of working life, and I am from another EU country but have been living and working here for three and a half years, any advice would be great, thanks!!

If you haven't been paying CT because you've allowed them to think that you're still a student you may find yourself prosecuted for benefit fraud as well as being asked to repay the money owed.

If you come clean asap you may find yourself in less trouble.

It might be worth getting a letter from uni confirming when you left, they may ask for it for you JSA claim to ensure you are not still in FTE
