Your order is delivered - but of course it isn't

I had an item dispatched by Royal Mail yesterday. From an online business not ebay so apologies if this is off topic.

It's now 8am the day after dispatch. So there's no way it will be here by now as the mail comes later.

So what does my order status on the company's website say? That my order has been delivered. Royal mail tracking says that it doesn't recognise my reference number.

Why do companies do this? It's hardly the first time as I had the same problem with Yodel. I find it really annoying, as it causes at least some concern that the package has gone astray.

Had a similar experience with a Royal Mail Special Delivery parcel I was expecting during the blizzard last week - online tracking stated 'attempted delivery - card left' at 8.30 in the morning even though the postie hadn't been anywhere near us for days - no one could get here because of the snow.

A blatant lie to get them out of a failed guaranteed delivery.

I had the same problem with Collect+ last week even tho the customer was at home and the item couldnt have gone through the letter box. The system is open to abuse if no one has to sign for it!

The company involved has responded to my query. They apologise for the misleading statement that the item had been delivered, and say that this is due to an IT issue. The sports shop about 15-20 miles away from me is however pleased to tell me that my item is now in the UK (!) and can be tracked.

Custard why do you ask that?
Is that a sign of a fake number or something else?

I only ask as I have a claim in with Paypal for INR from China with this style tracking number given.

no,thats the layout for all RM barcodes(and internationals)

The last 2 letters are the country code.
So GB here,CN is China etc
The 1st 2 are just part of the number but do relate to the service used in some cases

Yes, it's two letters, nine digits, followed by 'GB'.

    Tracking is now working.
