Carers car insurance?

Hi i have been trying to do some research all evening and can't make neither heads or tails of it.

My neighbour is disbabled and in reciept of HRM, she does'nt own a car herself but her son cares for her on a full time basis. He is in reciept of carers allowance and today took the DLA car tax certificate to the post office and got his car tax. After she/he handed him the tax disc she asked him if he had changed his insurance? He and now i am baffled. Does he need special insurance, will it be reduced or increased? If so does anyone know the best company to use?

  • As far as I'm aware he needs neither Public Liability Insurance nor any additional other kind of insurance. In this case he's a family member providing his mother with transport via her exempted tax disk. The fact that he receives carers allowance in this case is irrelevant to the DVLA.

That vehicle however must, as is always the case only be used only for the purpose of the disabled person, his mother.

Thanks for that, he has moved in with his mum i do know he doesn't seem to go out much at all but he takes her for a long drive every sunday and their household shopping on a friday, which is when i pop in for a chat with her. I will let him now about the insurance.
  • Are you sure the PO worker wasn't trying to sell him new insurance? Everytime I go to the Post Office these days they are trying to punt at least one financial product to me.
