Trying to tidy up friends computer

Options
I have disabled a lot of start up programmes and am now looking at processes and there are multiple svchost.exe shown in the list. Is it possible to stop these?

Thanks,

Fortyfoot

    It's possible - but it's not a good idea.

Fortyfoot, I've found using this website https://www.blackviper.com and then clicking on the OS thats installed on the computer which services you can safely disable. I used the website when i had xp pro and now that i'm on win7.
unlike other sites which just say turn it off, it tells you exactly what the service is and does, and then you can decide.

Tidying up another persons machine is a horrible and thankless job.

Personally I'd prefer a flatten and rebuild as then you can be certain it isn't full of browser toolbars/BHO's, useless helper/starter services and other horrid nasties. Still a horrible thankless job though.

It is quite obvious that you do not really know what you are doing, I hope you have backed up all their data, as you are quite likely to remove something that is vital and stop the computer booting.

Yes, I have told him to get a new one. He collected it last night and was pleased with it's improved speed.

I am not an expert and when I am not sure, I post on here and always get good advice.

This is one of the best forums on MSE.

Thanks for the help and advice.

with vista , a backup and factory restore gives the best results, but

rapport, nokia, sony ericsson, supportsoft, google updaters, spybot, windows defender, superantispyware, wild tangent, google and other toolbars, hp healthcheck could go (ie be uninstalled)
