I don't know how you can say there is little difference between going from Dos/3.1 to Windows 95!

The differences are massive and fundlemental to the Users Interface from DOS/3.1 to 95!!

What I was trying to say, maybe badly, was that moving from XP to Vista requires users to learn a new OS. Moving from DOS/Win 3.1 to Win 95 also required users to learn a new OS so what's the big deal people seem to have with Vista being different?

Every new OS is different and needs a certain amount of learning. A lot of people seem to think that because Vista isn't an exact clone of XP it is somehow too confusing for users.

    My two penneth:

Under the hood changes - It's only an O/S, we buy PC's to run applications.
    Aero - who cares?
Search - crapper than crap, what was wrong with start, find in NT?
Gadgets - I had something similar in the WFW3.11 days.
UAC - If you make things so annoying that people allow everything or turn it off completely, it's pointless.
Improved security - we will see..
A shutdown/restart button would have been nice.
Having numerous different versions just complicates the market, they should have just released one.

Most radical improvent over previous O/S's: Sound recorder lasts more than a minute.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Thats good as a security precaution as it stops unwanted software being installed on sytems, so go ask an admin before installing.

But some applications require admin rights. It's not a well designed system. I for example wouldn't be able to play Battlefield 2 properly (due to Punkbuster) without admin rights.

But whats the point in having a fancy graphics package if most users wont use it ie aero is hardly a requirement for the average user but aero is a good thing for web designers because of the ne windo tabulation and 3d enhancments.

But they will and do. People get sold on the new flashy look. Why use something that looks grey and old, when you have have something so much more colourful, interactive.

I also use Berly in Linux. Ok so a lot of it's eye candy, but I just prefer it. It's nicer to look at (especially if I'm using it for hours), more interactive, I can do more with it. It's a step forward in desktop development.

The thing is i know what your saying and have then discussed this with you and hopefully we have seen different sides of the same coin, my concern is the amount of users who are not educated enough as to know what to do with admin rights (see what i mean)

this is most likely to user preference whilst i dont like a boring grey gui i neither find that animated cursors or a 3d layered window or a transparent window (now that is daft) will somehow enhance my PC what i do want to know is that my PC and other PCs i fix wont crash because of a problem with graphics or a problem with memory or an unsecure os, so reliabillity is paramount for me (not saying it isnt for you) and i dont need the xtra bells and whistles, and i do understand that xp was flaky also but you have to say its very good now and i suppose thats why dell did a turnaround.

Fair enough, can be said about every other OS.
    Aero - who cares?

Most people prefer a nice looking desktop to work on esp if we are spending hours on it each day. Each person Ive shown Vista over XP side by side prefer Vista Aero Over XP anyday to work on. Whether it does anything else doesnt come into it. Vista is much nicer to look at which adds to the user experince.
Search - crapper than crap, what was wrong with start, find in NT?

I personally find the new search much quicker and better to use and is simliar to MAC OS X. I can find stuff almost instantly using it. However This can be changed to classic menus in Vista if you dont like it so dont see what the prblem is.
Gadgets - I had something similar in the WFW3.11 days.

But it wasnt in XP or other previous versions from standard install and it is a nice and useful addition.

UAC - If you make things so annoying that they people allow everything or turn it off completely, it's pointless.

You get used to it. I dont even notice it now when I know I have prompted it through an action. I do think they can improve this by adding a option to remember your previous action on certain programs. Its basically there to prompt when you didnt request an action.
A shutdown/restart button would have been nice.

Again this can be changed in Control Panel to preference within Vista.

I agree they have to many versions. 2 should have been enough.

And that "DELETE" option for the recycle bin. How annoying. Do you know how many times I have deleted the blooming thing when I was meant to be emptying it? but again it could be me:confused:
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

I meant in terms of XP and Vista. In Vista you don't have to be a full admin, and can still use it comfortably. Yet in XP you can run as a user, but some apps require admin access using it. This isn't the case with Vista.

Yeah, it can and does come down to user opinion.

In terms of stability Aero is very stable. Much more so than the Linux equivalents. OS X's Aqua interface is very stable too.

The extras come about in the sense. Transparency, very handy for quickly seeing a window sat behind another window. Same with a 3D desktop, it give you another dimension with which to work with. It's especially easier for finding a window when you have quite a few open, or need to switch focus between apps often.

I know it's subjective, but given the choice I can't see why you'd pick the grey windows over Vista, unless performance, or speed/responsiveness were an absolute must.

The search functionality mentioned is greatly improved. It's gone beyond just searching the file system, or just filenames.

yeah i see what you mean now but i have found some customers who dont know how to allow individual permissions and i can be a bit sketchy at times, i mean a customer of mine wanted to allow permission for a program and we set permission to allow then i installed installed some more ram and after a restart the permission was set to prompt again i did this on several occasions but still no joy  maybe a patch would fix this!

i will say this can be a tad annoying for the older citezen who can see the desktop bleeding through word when typing a letter, i personally think it needed a little more though when ms brought out this feature as again it can be a bit of a pain when setting transparecy
