Don't worry; he'll be eligible for a Maintenance Loan and (probably) a Maintenance Grant which is there for him to pay for his keep so you should probably be better off than you are now.

Make him pay rent if you want some more dosh...0

My son pays about £3500 per year on accomodation at uni, that includes many of his meals, so base his 'keep' on that.

The Maintenance Loan for someone living at home is about £1,000 less than if he were living away from home as it should be less expensive. If you're on a low income he'll also get a Maintenance grant. The government don't allow him over £5,000 just for pocket money! As Soolin says halls of residence (with meals) are about £3,500 and he would still have to pay extra for things like washing and insurance. I would think that he should be paying at least £2,000/£2,500 for his keep; this is what the money is allocated to him for. Don't let him get away with thinking that he'll have all his loan and grant for spending money; he's supposed to keep himself out of these funds.0 -
If you don't feel comfortable charging him board, couldn't you take, say £50 a week, secretly save it and pay it off his tuition fees loan for him when he graduates?
You'd be helping him a lot more that way than allowing him to have all the maintenance loan & grant just for spending money.0 -

Why should she feel uncomfortable charging him for board when the government makes this money available to him for this purpose?
I assume as well, from the original post, that she actually needs the money. If he gets a grant it's because the family's on a low income!0 -
Helloo
Sorry to semi-hijack (but it is in keeping with original question)... when do we have to inform all the powers that be of change from f/t school (A levels) to Uni? The kids don't actually go to Uni til September and they may fail and have to resit so stay in school another year. I'm confused, I'm tired and when I look in the mirror lately, I'm very depressed
