Unemployed credit card

I have a 22yo friend who is a part-time student. His income is £30K (pre-tax) as he has inherited 2 properties and is renting them out, and he is somehow receiving a pension which was part of his bereaved father's estate.

He has 3 CCs with 10K limit and unused overdrafts, no negative marks on credit files. To get those cards he reported his employment status as Student or Other. He is nearing the end of 0% deals and is looking for somewhere to transfer. Balances are on Lloyds, Nationwide and Tesco. MSE's soft-search says 0% chance for MBNA.

Barclaycard's application form does not allow you to put Student or Other. He tried their soft-search putting Part-Time Employed and got 80-90% chance of approval for most of their good cards.

Given that he is not employed at all I said that putting Part-Time would be wrong, and he is sort of self-employed but probably doesn't fall under a strict definition of that. The only other category which would fit him is Unemployed. Given the above what does everyone think about his chances of approval?

  • Is there any chance he can apply over the phone and explain this direct to an operator?

Might have a better chance if they know the real circumstances instead of just the black and white stats????

Worth a try if it's possible to apply this way.

He is self employed. He is renting out property, his other income is the pension??? And assume he is declaring income and paying tax.

I wouldn't buy into MSE's soft-search, I've done a soft-search for the Etihad Guest and Virgin Atlantic CC (both MBNA issued cards) and I got my dad to do it also, we were both told that we were not eligible. I'd understand myself being denied based on employment but my dad who has (according to CRAs) an excellent credit history, hasn't had an issues with other companies and basically ticks all the boxes for application and MSE's soft-search said "nope" :rotfl:

I've come to the conclusion either MBNA don't want new customers or MSE's soft-search is off the mark by quite a bit. I do wonder though how students and other people appear to get MBNA cards though if the MSE soft-search is correct in its reasoning, I thought MBNA didn't offer to anyone that wasn't employed (with Virgin you have to be employed from what I was told when I queried my previous application, no idea about Etihad as I haven't applied)? :o

In response to the overall question, Barclaycard will most likely give him a card, I got one when I wrote unemployed and had worse income.
