I have fitted some of thes adaptors to my modem and laptop.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-PA411KIT-AV500-Powerline-Adapter/dp/B0084Y9N3O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359575014&sr=8-1

They work great, but if my son is on his computer, which is wired direct to the same modem, it really slows his down.

I am only browsing the internet when I am on my laptop.

Any ideas?

Not likely to be the powerline adapters , is it his Lappy which is slow , and do you mean slow browsing? It may be his laptop is looking for wifi , but your description is not very clear...sorry

What is your son using his PC for? Could it by any chance be running torrents or some other P2P application?
  • It's not the Powerline adaptors...

    Sorry if I wasn't clear.
My son has a computer that is wired direct with an ethernet cable to the modem. He plays games online, downloads stuff and uses his x box.

I have a laptop with the adapters,he says when my laptop is connected to the adaptor, his computer slows down to a crawl.

But when he unplugs the adaptor from my laptop, his computer goes back to been really quick.

    My speed is 28 mbps

What happens if your laptop is connected directly to the modem using an ethernet cable?
How do I add a signature?

    What slows down?
His computer or his internet connection.

You can use broadband speed test sites to test your speeds seperately and together.
You an also monitor what is running on you machines (and the connection speeds) with the task manager that should give you a better idea of what is happening.

2 devices using your broadband connection at the same time will obviously make 1 or both devices slower than with only 1 connected.
It would be the same if you were using wi-fi or wired to the router by ethernet cable.

Is it one of the cheapo Thompson routers?

Does he have mapped network drives to your PC / open shares? If its the actual PC grinding to a halt, I'd first run a full virus check, check firewall settings on both PCs etc. Also if you press ctrl alt delete at same time on slow PC, you'll be able to view what programs are using most CPU /memory. Multiple svchost instances might be slowing things down, try temporarily turning off antivirus on slow PC and see if it helps.
