help me buy a car please

hi all, again.

im the idiot who got myself into further debt by buying crap cars along the past year. my post is in here somewhere, think its titled UK car market complete joke.

anyway, ive taken all the advice on board. and suprisingly webuyanycar offered me 1935 for my citroen c3. ive got the injector that was busted replaced for free off the warranty, so it is running ok now however i am very worried something else later on will happen to it.

ive checked around and found these:

- Honda Civic - 1.4 1997 - 136K miles - £600 - private seller
- Ford Fiesta - 1.3 1997 - 46K miles - £495 - trade seller
- Ford Fiesta - 1.3 1999 - 107K miles - £600 - private seller
- Mitsubishi Charisma - 1.6 1996 - 77K miles - £600 - private seller

I only put the 495 fiesta because it is simply 495, would not hurt to ask why he is selling it or why the old owner even gave it up.

Getting something cheap and reliable such as 1 of these for example will allow me to basically write off 2K of debt on x1 credit card. then i`ll only have x1 credit car left with 2k on it and my loan that finishes in 3 years.

Can anyone help me please on this. If you find something please post it. I live in Bournemouth and prepared to travel up to 40 miles.

Thanks.

  • I'd look for something which is still a bit different so will hold it's value and not nessasarily make you want to kill yourself everytime you see it. Since your list includes all sizes of car then cars such as these come to mind:

    Ford Puma
    Peugeot 406 Coupe
    Mazda MX5
well equipped Renault Laguna (post 2001)
    Ford Ka
    MG ZT

    Or for reliability:
    Volvo S/V40
    Honda Accord
    Audi A4
    Ford Focus
Rover 75 diesel (chain cambelt so doesnt need replacing)

Just make sure that it's well serviced and had the cambelt changed/is far enough away from needing it!

We bought a Renault Clio 2001 for my missus to learn to drive in. Bought for £750 and sold 10 months later for £1050.

  • appreciated timbo however there's no way i`ll ever touch another french car. rover is interesting though. cant do the accord, i didnt mention that it also has to be cheapish to run and a 2litre engine wont come cheap to run.

If it's been well looked after, get the Honda Civic. I had a 1997 1.4 and it was a truly fantastic car, never let me down and was very economical. The acceleration isn't out of this world, but I used to make long motorway journeys in it and it used to bowl happily along in the fast lane :D

At that end of the price range, You want word of mouth. Ask around if anyone is selling a car.

You want something thats been owned by the same person for at least 3 years and even though its a cheap banger still serviced properly.

Something older but in better condition rather than the newest or best looking car you can find.

You wont get much choice, You want a focus its reliable but wating for the right one may see better cars pass you by.

  • well ive found another civic close by for around 600 quid. it looks great and the owner has been truthful about any defects on it which are just cosmetic scratches in places on the bumpers and the heater fan does not work on speeds 1 and 2 but does on 3 and 4.

im going to look at it tomorrow and hopefully webuyanycar will take mine tomorrow and i`ll be 1 major step closer to being debt free!!!!

this is the same honda civic classic model of 1989-1993 and my parents have bought one new from 1989 and ive been in it and driven it as my first car and know it all my life, so i cant see how i could go wrong here. the 1st owner of this 1 had it for 15 years and its done only 97K miles, on that engine in that honda thats peanuts - it could probably outlive me at the rate i drive if i did get it.

2.2TDCi is pretty reasonable! (so long as its not all 1-2 mile journeys)

At your price range = PRE-DPF.....
My OH drives the estate and it feels quite nice... reliable as you'd expect. Civic wise you're possibly jumping into the poor years.... still as reliable as most cars but not as Honda reliable as the Accords that age...

For under £1k I reckon you should be looking at the likes of kia rios, daewoo lanos's, kalos, leganza, old swifts, daihatu sirion/cuore. All shit cars, but more modern and far more reliable than a 12 year old rusty ford someone desperate to get shot of or a used and abused civic by someone watching fast n furious too many times. Actually, the really old model civic can take a hell of a beating, the newer models seem more fragile, probably 'cos of all the computers in them.

I assume they haven't actually bought it from you yet, ie handed over money. What they offer and what you actually get aren't really related.

good point. i think ive found 1 that's newer (1999) 35 miles away from me. 167K miles, £695, and 2 owners. that seems more genuine if the last owner had it for some years and not a very short time, correct?

bad thing is though a trader is selling it. will have to see later on why he is selling it and why the last owner gave it in.

however with the classic one the private seller is telling me that the 1st owner simply stopped driving she was a very old lady, and the 2nd owner that had it for 5 years and theres no explanation as to why the 2nd owner sold it.

if i do look at it, any tips on what to look out for?
