Refund for cancelled course

I was recently advised that an evening course I applied for was cancelled. When I asked the college about a refund I was told it could take up to 6 weeks
I paid the full course fee (around £100) by Debit card - surely they should refund me immediately? They cancelled the course because of lack of people attending, that wasn't my fault. Now I can't even go and look for another course because I can't afford it without getting my money back. Any ideas anyone ?

IIRC most refunds tend to state it can take up to 4 weeks+, I suspect because they have to go through the accounting process properly, and possibly be done on a set day or as part of a batch of payments (the same as paying suppliers, or staff), so everything is fully accounted for and it reduces the chance of fraud, and then allow for the time it might take to process at the banks.
In many cases though once a refund has been raised it takes less time than the maximum, I've been told "up to X weeks" from companies in the past and had it through within a couple of days.0 -
Not a lot you can do about it, they have told you they will refund so no one will get involved on your behalf. DSR states they should refund within 30 days, may not help you because this has nothing to do with DSR but you could point it out to them that 30 days is the expected refund time scale according to the law.0

When was the course due to start ?
If you have not recieved a refund by the day after it was due to start. Contact your card provider and get them to action a chargeback for non reciept of service.
