Excel help!

Trying to do my own spreadsheets for budgeting but never been taught formally so making it up as I go along but I'm stumped!

Is there a way say B column & J column added together give total K column how do I get K to work out number in K row above ( ie previous Total +B +J = new total in K

Help!
Start by doing what's necessary, then what's possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.

  • I'm lookin to format the whole column K to hold total then add the next line B & J to make new total in K

eg in K2, you could have =K1+B2+J2. You then drag the formula down through the whole of column K and it will automatically adjust it for the next rows values.
  • Thank you! Knew I could rely on this place!

  • What if I want M23 as my shortfall so M column needs to be M23 minus total in J but J will change on each row. When I try & copy formula it keeps doing M24 or M25 minus total in J but I want it to always be M23 minus total in J for that row. Hope that makes sense?

  • So I can see how my shortfall is going down!

  • enter it as $m$23

The $ fixes both positions so that they don't change

formula in M24 should be =M$23-J24. The M$23 part when copied into other column M remains as M$23, but J24 will change to J25 J26 for M25, M26..... If you want to keep column fixed use $M23, if both row and column are to be kept fixed use $M$23
  • Thanks so much that has worked perfectly! x
