I have started sudying with OU, which is great as it fits around my part time job. Perhaps you could see if there are any relevant course you might like to do to get you started with your shift. There are also courses you can do for free, which they don't run anymore, so you dont get a qualification, but they would give you an idea of what to expect."On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." My hero, Mr Steer.0

Why don't you actually get a full-time job? I'm sure that most employers wouldn't begrudge a parent starting at 9:30 if they worked the extra time at the end of the day.
Or failing that, why not start doing an evening class in something you're interested in?0 -
I wonder if you should bring up some of this at your appraisal? It depends a bit on the appraiser - are they a person who listens and who might act? I think you could say that you wondered whether regular social interaction within the firm might be beneficial and help create more of a team spirit (show you're thinking about the firm's good not your own??). I think you could also say that you feel ready to take on new responsibilities if anything comes up, again you look like someone up for a challenge. You're right not to go in and say you're fed up but if you are coming up with constructive solutions to problems at worst you look like a person with imagination, which is not so bad. TBH too it gives something for the appraiser to talk about which is good, sometimes those sessions can be deadening.
If none of this is appropriate I'd say you should go to your local volunteering bureau, tell them your skills and see what volunteering opportunities they suggest for you. if CAB is right for you then go for it but it might be worth getting some professional advice on other options?
Good luck!!0 -
I know how you feel & I'm in a similar position but I am unable to leave & do anything voluntary as my husband isn't a big earner & we rely on my money & the few perks that are left in my industry - there is no-one in our branch (8 of us) who would not take voluntary redundancy if it was offered but anyone who leaves these days walks out on their own as they can no longer take the pressure - so if you come up with a masterplan that works let me know!!0

The situation you find yourself in could happen in any firm to anyone earning 5k or 50k a year. Try and widen your horizons with further education for it's own sake or voluntary work or a hobby which really takes your interest. At the moment all you have to think about is work and home, leaving you too much time on your hands for thinking about how bored you are, becuase you are . HTH, chin up - summers nearly here..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

That is definitely true, all there is is work and home and my husband and children. Everything except the work bit is great.
I know a lot of people in my position who are extremly happy with this - they never go out, never do anything - I just couldn't bear it.
Thanks for your replies everyone - I will consider them all (except maybe perhaps the working full time bit!).0 -
Have a look at https://www.do-it.org.uk for volunteer opportunites in your town. The variety might surprise you and something catch your interest and give you something to think about when you're feeling bored at work. Good luck.................
