Can JSA tell from your national insurance when you start work?

Hi all!

I have been out of work for about 12 weeks. Last week I got a job with an agency who placed me with a company full time. I didn't sign off straight away as I was asked to start the same day and didn't have time. I did 2 days and the work folded. I am really annoyed because I had only just been recruited.

My agency has now placed me in a permanent position with another company but it doesn't start for another 3 weeks. I know it's a bit cheeky but I amwondering if I should bother telling JSA about the 2 days as I dont want to mess around with my benefit as I will need it to get to the new job which starts in 3 weeks. I am worried sick over this but am concerned I will get into trouble if I dont tell them about the 2 days work.

Any advice helpful.

  • If you are worried, just declare the 2 days work when you next sign on, this is the correct procedure, you will lose the money pound for pound from your Jobseekers Allowance but it will all be above board.

  • So it's possible to declare working for 2 days and still stay on JSA until my next job starts?

Yes, as long as you are working under 16 hours a week you can remain on JSA, if you worked over 16 hours for one benefit week they will give you a JSA4 form to complete and things will carry on as normal. If you work 16 hours or over for two consecutive benefit weeks your claim will close and you would have to make a rapid reclaim.
