  • Was that before or after.
  • well, lets face it. If you but ready made, processed items; you can not ever be 100% sure of what goes into them. I am willing to bet that this is not restricted to burgers, most of the meat products probably have more than what is actually listed

Simple answer (usually healthier, and cheaper) is if at all possible to make your own pies. sausage rolls, burgers etc

Don't eat pies, sausage rolls, burgers, pasties myself as I low carb. I sometimes eat quiches but not the pastry.

I buy Higgidy pies and quiches for OH for lunches www.higgidy.co.uk - not organic but no nasties. Available from most supermarkets and were on offer at Sainsbury's when I bought them last week.

Also buy him Pegoty Hedge ready meals which are farm-made and again no nasties www.pegotyhedge.co.uk available from Abel & Cole and Ocado. Useful for him when I'm not here and he can bung in oven and have with frozen organic oven chips and peas.

Lastly, I just bought pies from Riverford, made on an organic farm in Devon. www.riverford.co.uk which he raved about.

This is true but it leaves one with a dilemma when travelling. However well labelled foods may be in the supermarkets (and we can probbably all agree thatthey are not well labelled now) what do you do when forced to eat out?

    Good question A. Badger !

High end restaurants would be able to tell you where the meat and fish comes from, but surprisingly, not much of it would be organic.

There are chains which try to provide healthier food, some of which will be organic eg leon, Pret A Manger.

McDonalds sells environmentally friendly (but not organic) coffee and all the milk is organic milk.

In a restaurant I would go for the wild fish and veg which would have been peeled.

I think the answer lies with the consumer. Ask for what you want, ask questions, try not to compromise.

So slivercrest new they were importing meat from Poland ?
And Tesco had an agreement that only meat from Ireland and UK would be used ?
Seems Silvercrest have done something wrong here ?

I thought this beef /horse product was used in other stuff ?
    Lasagne and pies ?

I do tend to agree we have distanced our procurement so far from our consumption that nourishment ,flavour and even integrity is nowhere near the top priority during the purchasing negotiations .

This is pretty obvious when you see the crap we feed our kids ,ill or elderly

I wouldn't worry about it. Afterall, how much do we really know about any of the food we consume.
Unless you've grown it yourself, you know nothing.

You wouldnt worry about it aye, Hmmmmm, well what ever these horses were injected with that can be harmful to humans regardless of the country of origin, mind saying that, poland has lower standards than us!!.

    I think its disgusting !!

This has happened because these food factories now employ mostly eastern european staff, from poland , Hmmmm what a coincidence!!

But by all means , feed your children food from these places.

People just think its a matter of a bit of horse meat in your food, lol, so niave.

Poland has been in the EU some years now, should be to EU standard now surely.

Labelling, content and safety split between DEFRA and FSA since 2010n budget reductions so fewer inspections.

FSAI was testing new test last year which we don't have in UK, not validated here yet.

Silvercrest did the deed but big Q is, did Tesco know ?

If Tesco didn't how come not more cheval in Iceland stuff too ?

One of the (many) problems with the EU is that although standards are allegedly the same across the various countries, the reality is they are not.

I recently hired a builder who is renovating a house in Italy. We were discussing the arrangements here in the UK for the disposal of sewage where there is no mains drainage. Where I live, the Environment Agency is incredibly strict in the rigid enforcement of water purity rules (quite rightly). He was explaining to me how, in Italy, the rules are just shrugged aside. I've heard similar stories from people in Spain and Ireland.

My guess is that much the same is true in food production. We've just seen how standards can be atrocious here, even where the rules are usually enforced. My guess is that despite the EU, in other countries those standards can vary widely.

sorry guys been busy few days.

found this on irish rte tv website

Tesco said today's decision relates only to frozen burgers and that it will continue to purchase fresh Irish beef worth more than €100m a year from other ABP companies.

Ok if silvercrest subsidary of ABP-large irish company-the breached trust however tesco happy to get fresh from them? Anyone else find that odd?
Why are tesco not seeking legal action of silvercrests fault? as reputation and money lost and serious breech contract? makes me think tesco knew more.

Not sure about lifey foods but think the dalpack in yorkshire also subsidary of ABP-Horsemeat was found there but not in waitrose burgers.

Also percentage bothers me lilds, aldis, dunnes 1%
co-op was more and axed silvercrest too.

but why did tesco have more? 29%i assumed they use greater%filler to meat compared to other brands.

If horsemeat not routinly eaten in poland.
Then how do we kno the stuff was safe and not high in drugs or can they drug test a brger too.

Teco pledge to test seems too little too late.
Im kind of amazed they never random tested in past as saw on jimmys supermarket and another programe how they bring products to shelf and they have focus groups and test kitchens at head office.

I imagine they got good price and dident ask too may questions.

find it hard to believe silvercrest did this and think they could get away with it but guess if tesco still willing to use parent company then silvecrest brand could go new name and tesco contract reinstated says cynic in me.

I wonder how much choice they have of factories?
