Confused Tesco horsemeat -plot thickens!

Tesco have just released statement on horse meat saga after their own investigation and concluded

Tesco: Burger supplier used meat not from approved suppliers
Tesco says that its investigation into how horse DNA was found in three of its frozen beef burger lines has found that its supplier used meat from outside the UK and Ireland.

The evidence tells us that our frozen burger supplier, Silver crest, used meat in our products that did not come from the list of approved suppliers we gave them.

Nor was the meat from the UK or Ireland, despite our instruction that only beef from the UK and Ireland should be used in our frozen beef burgers.

Consequently we have decided not to take products from that supplier in future.

We took that decision with regret but the breach of trust is simply too great.

– TIM SMITH, TESCO GROUP TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

1)huge amounts of their products come from silvercrest and they denied was their fault.

2)They still say horsemeat but was lead to believe it was horse dna from powdered protein yet they still using word meat.

3)its not irish meat or british they know that much.

so why they not saying which country its from

who supplied the supplier

if its ok for human consumption?

very little we do know and blaming supplier.

I fail to see how such huge company like silvercrest would jeopardise such huge retail contract like tesco and use their list of suppliers.

wonder if they scapegoats.

when we will find out whats really happened as still not telling us anymore than we know.

Think theirs house commons hearing on it later this afternoon 2.45.

I think that although most of the products in question showed horse DNA, the economy burgers had horsemeat in them.

Thanks guys must have missed that as was nothing in tesco statement today.

It does seem like silvercrest were innocent and affected 2others

    lifey foods and dalepack.

Its irish company and The irish regulaters spotted it.

If they lose tesco -would there be job losses?

Can see irish being annoyed and think tesco have stores in ireland too.

So I assume they know which polish supplier it was?
what are poles doing about it?
Do they routinly breed and eat horse there?

    Was it accidental or deliberate?

tescos claim was they used a supplier that wasent on their list suppliers list so breached contract.

Wonder how many people there are in chain? 4 or 5? Was their polish middleman ?

    Whos going to get prosecuted?

    Do tesco shoulder no blame?

Have they tested other meats and meat products?

They were quick to blame holland before.

  • Poland's General Veterinary Inspectorate is investigating the claims but the abbotoirs in question are not known to process horsemeat & in any case they just slaughter the animals meat is minced & turned into burgers elsewhere.

I wouldn't worry about it. Afterall, how much do we really know about any of the food we consume.
Unless you've grown it yourself, you know nothing.

In the UK. genetically modified crops and products made from them are trackable until they disappear into animals and poultry, then they don't have to be labelled in the supermarkets.

Organic food is trackable, if you look by the EU leaf symbol there are codes. It has to be trackable to be certified organic.

Red Tractor meat and poultry should be traceable too as it has to confrom to certain standards to be eligible and having read the rules they are quite strict even down to ensuring tat dogs and cats on the farm are wormed and records kept - but there's nothing banning the farmers from feeding GM crops or feed.

Whether it's true or not, the perception is that Tesco turned a blind eye to the junk being mixed into the value burgers by the processors.

Having read several articles about the cost pressure which Tesco puts on suppliers, IMO the processors may have been so close to the fiscal cliff themselves that they felt forced to buy in cheap from wherever - thinking that no-one would be able to find stuff in the burgers.

Whether Tesco is being economical with the truth or not, the future doesn't look good for the processors.

If Tesco won't deal with you, that's a big chunk of dosh lost. If Tesco says it won't trust the processor anymore, will the other supermarkets using the processor pull out too ?

Sometimes some good comes out of food controversy and if DNA testing becomes the norm that will make the food supply chain safer.
