Can anyone help, I have a Renault megan 2008. So far I have had to have the heater fixed twice, the electric windows fixed twice and now I have a problem with the gearbox. I have just had a new sensor but it is still not working properly. On my way to Uni this morning the car would not go above 50 and was revving very high, it is a dual automatic gearbox. When put on the diagnostic machine there just seems to be pages and pages of things it could be. As a single parent and full time student I do not have the funds to keep on paying out.

I'd go to the Megane owners website/forum and seek advice from other unfortunate French car victims.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Modern cars are nice until they go wrong. Seems they call it progress and improvements.
Why have a solid chunk of metal that rarely ever failed when you can replace it with one makde from 30 parts held together with bits of elastic band and charge £1200 to replace it. Extra £1200 for the garage.
How long have you had the car?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Get rid of it and get something that isn't Renault for a start. In fact, avoid french cars (renault, citroen, pegueot) all together if you can.
Get something like a Toyota, Mitsubishi, Volvo, Ford.. anything that has an indestructible engine and gearbox that will keep going.0 -
French electrics are notoriously bad. sorry. I agree entirely with TrickyWicky ... I've known several people that have had French cars that have been seriously problematic. If you're savvy with the internet and a toolbox then great, but if you have to take it to a garage each time then it's likely going to be costly

Pity though, as Meganes are nice cars.0 -
Try getting your car a car check up! I once bought pre-owned cars in Texas and I made sure I check all possible problems that may occur.0

Like a Volvo or Ford with a Peugeot/Citroen engine?
Unfortunately it is not that simple these days.
If you're after a reliable car you should get a Toyota - they are as exciting as a freezer/refrigerator, but quite reliable."Retail is for suckers"

Yes, things have definitely changed over the years.

These days you need a credit card to accompany your car, just in case."Retail is for suckers"

If it is chucking up loads of codes, have a look how to clear them (might be as simple as pulling the battery for 30 mins - CHECK!) and then let it get codes just for this fault.
If the gearbox has gone, you'll be looking at a fair amount for a specialist to repair it (which should be cheaper than the astronomical cost of a new box).
depending on the prices, you'll need to weigh up whether it is economical to fix or best to sell as spares/repair.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
Get a Toyota Yaris, horrid little thing but reliable and economical if you get the diesel.
VW Polo and Golf are others that seem to live forever, if you want something reliable as hell but don't need a big car - buy an MX5, I think when the ice age cometh and downtown Machester is about -63c people will still nip outside start up the mx5 and drive to work.0
