Not charged VAT.

I recently had work carried out on my car at a major retailer. I paid my bill then left. Subsequently I have been contacted by phone saying that they forgot to charge me VAT on my bill and I should pay the difference @ £40. Now if I was to be given the incorrect change or the likes in a shop and I walk out the door then it's my fault I believe so how do I stand in this circumstance? I just want to know as I will pay the bill this week anyway.

What did your invoice say about VAT?

At the end of the day the VAT is still owed and will need paying.

The contract has been completed when you paid the bill and they gave you back your car with the fault/faults repaired. Do they have your debit or credit card details?

Surely a consumer bill is final once paid as VAT does not have to be shown separately unless requested ?

Garages tend to regularly deal with both VAT and non-VAT registered customers so they'll issue a VAT invoice as standard.

If no VAT invoice is issued and no VAT charged, it is the responsibility of the trader to pay the VAT, not the consumer.

The law says that if an invoice does not mention VAT separately, it is to be assumed that it was included in the total price, and so should be appropriately deducted from that. You should not have to now pay extra, and a court will rule in your favour.

So the question is, is will the OP ever need to go back?
