Life & CI for someone with asthma?

We're looking to review our plans and hopefully find a cheaper deal without losing benefit.
My wife suffers from asthma and at the time BUPA were one of a very few to accept this condition and provide cover.
We also pay a higher premium in view of this.
Can anyone please suggest any alternatve cover providers we might approoach who would look more favourably on her medical condition?

Thanks for any advice

Asthma is a fairly common condition so I can only imagine she suffers quite badly from it if you are paying a higher premium?

In cases like this using a whole of market adviser can be a good idea. We have access to the underwriters from each company and can therefore make a call and find out what they would likely do without the need to submit a full application.

THis can be important because if you do apply and are rated or rejected you must then declare this on any future applications.

Most people cover Asthma at standard rates and have done for a while. Im going to copy Stephenni and say its presumably quite bad?

It does no harm to review your cover periodically anyway so it might be worth speaking to a mortgage or financial advisor to see if they can save you a few quid each month.

But to answer your question, most if not all will cover at standard rates, unless it is quite severe, but the chances of dieing because of an asthma attack is quite slim - so it shouldnt really be costing you more than someone without asthma.

Generally, the insurers will ask if there have been any attacks resulting in hospital admission in the last 2,3 or 5 years (depending on insurer) and if steroid tablet treatment has been prescribed. If you can answer no to both of those, standard rates will be available. A supplementary question asking about time off work may result in a decline of any waiver of premium option, if applied for.

I asked about smoker status as most insurers (not all) will outright decline on the combination of smoking and asthma, regardless of how mild. That's clearly not the issue here though.
