A few years ago, I invested in an Electoral Role disc that contains phone numbers/addresses/maps/routing and the 2001 Electoral Role. I've found this to be a constantly used piece of information. Now, with my new XP system, I find the disk is unusable as the system requirements are 95/98/ME/2000.
If anyone knows of a cheap source to aquire a disc that I could use on XP, I'd be gratefull, meanwhile I suppose I must make my way to Mr ebay and dispose of this package of two discs.

What is it on the disc that requires an older version of Windows? Have you tried it in XP? It's unlikely that it wouldn't work but if that's the case, it could just be the application that lets you see and search the data. I'd guess that the data itself is in separate files that you might be able to open up in a text editor and perhaps even import into a database.
Another alternative is running 2000 or another version of Windows in a Virtual Machine.0 -
Agree with above, try it. Think about it, when this 2001 Electoral Role was sold way back then, not many people actually had XP which was launched late 2001, so they would not specify XP as a system requirement. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Agree with above. If you are just assuming that it won't work, just try it - you can do no harm.
If that fails, go to Start > Help and search for 'compatibility', then click on the article 'Getting older programs to run on Windows XP'.
If it still fails after following the advice there, post back the precise behaviour / error messages, and we may still be able to help.0 -
Wow, that was quick. I endevoured to install the Installation disc and it refused. I entered the correct info in the appropriate box but couldn't make in do anything. I'll try what you say tomorrow, but thanks. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

What exactly does it need to install?0

The compatibility options are found if you right click on the programs .exe file and select properties.
There should be a tab called compatibility and you can then tick the check box and use the drop down menu to select the operating system Win 95/98/2000/NT4.

Though it does require XP Pro.
XP Pro, XP Media Centre and XP Tablet PC Editions, also Vista above the basic one will work. But if you serach on google there may be a hack to make it fully run on Home, the same way someone hack to get IIS (Server) working on Home, but I warn you doing any hacking to the OS is illegal, breaks the EULA and the fact that you could break your OS and lost all the data on it.0
