20% increase in insurance!

A bit of a rant really!

I've just come off the phone with Argos (RS Alliance now) as my cats insurance renewal has come in with an increase of 20%. She is 6, I have never claimed, so wanted them to try and justify it.

I was told it's due to a big increase in vets fees! 20%!!! So, I could get a decrease by lowering the amount of cover - not an option or an answer - or pay a voluntary excess, which would bring it to £90 - still not an answer!

I'd been onto the comparison websites and was shocked at the amount they had increased since last year, mine was quite competitive.

To cut a long story short, I managed to wangle a £9 reduction so I'm only paying another fiver, but I just get the feeling that this insurance culture is a licence to print money, just when did all these procedures start to cost so much? (Rhetorical question.) The first question you get asked is 'is the pet insured', I'm sure its made a difference.

I don't want to start an insure or not debate - as we all know the pros and cons - I just don't like feeling they have got you over a barrel.

I was amazed at the hike in premium last September for my 2 collies. They doubled the premiums!! I now self insure.

Interestingly, there was a market analyst who posted last year singing the praises of RSA as the underwriter of something like over 50% of the market. I wonder if this is just part of the cycle, where you get the share by pricing low and then ramp up the premiums?

I just got my renewel from Argos for my 2 cats. My female will be 6 later this year and the male 4, and the renewal came through at about £1 more in total per month for them both - so around £17 but I rang up and got them to note that they were indoor only and its now less than it was last year.

    I've never claimed either.
  • my cat's has gone up from 10.71 to 27.91 in two years. (started at £4 per month then went up to £6 and then £9, ive had her 7 years) She's 12 now though..unlikely a "new" provider would take my old lady on, or certainly not any cheaper

    Barrel....im over it!
  • This might not be much consolation for you but just remember that if your cat has a problem, for example needs a heart scan for a murmur that alone would be £500+ (as I've learnt recently!) so while insurance is expensive, and more and more every year, at least you know you're doing the right thing for your pet.
