overpayment and childcare vouchers

Hi
If - due to an error when the salaries were changed - an employer forgets to deduct the childcare vouchers value on the payslip (and ultimately affecting take home pay) for an employee BUT still pays the vouchers as well...
where does the employee and employer stand when/if they notice the error? as basically the employee has been overpaid... the problem is re the tax, NIC and student loans repayments. If the employee stays at the company I realise it is straightforward BUT if
1. the employee leaves the company before the employer notices.
2. there are different tax years involved.
and is there a time period whereby they cannot try to reclaim?

Its about 7 years.
One wonders how the employee would feel if there were underpaid and left....
D70How about no longer being masochistic?
How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?0 -
One has been underpaid by same employer a few times in fact and they were in no rush to sort it out despite explaining how it was needed, nor does one get remunerated sufficiently for said job.
Overpayment will be highlighted to employer, but similarly, in no rush. It just made one wonder what the circumstances would be....0 -

wow I didn't realise people on these forums were so judgemental...
If you are living in a parallel universe where there is no recession and there is an abundance of well paid job opportunities I think your comment might then be valid!0 -

Its not really judgmental, its a point of observation. People become accustom to the position they are in and moan about it but generally do nothing about it.
And the recession argument holds little water, people can and do move jobs and have done year in year outDon't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
And I believe its 6 years not 7 to chase (5 in Scotland) any overpayments.
And yes you do have to pay it back but if it causes you financial hardship you can ask and the company should take into account what claiming it all back in one go can do and you should come to a payment scheme based over a reasonable amount of time.
Reasonable depends on your financial situation really but beware that if you leave the company and still owe alot they can take it from the last payday.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
Yes people do move about jobs, as my husband did after being made redundant (whom I am actually speaking about) whilst I was 6 months pregnant, after hundreds of applications in four months this was the first suitable job offered albeit more work and responsibility but less money. He isn't likely to refuse it now is he. Despite looking out for other jobs, and bearing in mind we also cannot relocate easily due to my good job and with 2 very small children, very little worth risking the change has come up since.
230 or so people applied for one part time, term time only admin job recently at the College I teach at. How on earth you can say the recession doesn't hold any water as an argument when clearly businesses are struggling and there is little growth resulting in less job opportunities. Practically all Colleges around the country will be announcing redundancies imminently, if they haven't already made them, and so I will not be able to walk into another job 'just like that' like I might have been able to previously.
Again, callous judgmental comments when you have no idea about circumstances are not useful, nor were they requested.
Thanks very much for your input on the topic I posted though.0 -

Ok, maybe I was a little harsh but my point is that we as humans do become lazy and accustomed to the situation and change scares the crap out of us.
You can make that change but why limit yourself to teaching. Can you not transfer your skills elsewhere or maybe add value to the position you are in now.
Could you look at private tuition? Added income but also great for the CV?Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
Do not spend it and advise them. Chances are only a pay day or two will pass before they notice.
I dont think they have to come to a payment arrangement but I am not 100%.Bad luck breeds bad luck.
Damn I'm doomed.0 -
I already do private tuition and work for the examination boards as an examiner in addition to my full time teaching job (which is why I am online now and supposed to doing just that). I am going to apply to do another MSc but in a related subject to then do a doctorate to become a Counselling Psychologist so I can work more flexibly. I can assure you neither my husband nor I are lazy. It is my husband's job that is underpaid and rubbish. We set him up his own business in IT support in addition to his full time job when he got made redundant so he can also earn extra cash too. He is about to re jig his CV and send this evening for an alternative job once he has bathed the kids. This job is better paid but all better paid jobs in IT now mean constant travel around the country/world, but this is less than ideal with 2 little children and me on my own as we both moved here away from our families for work. But needs must and it appears that is our current preferable option now as I want to go part time partly because we cannot afford 18k pa for full time child care but also I want to spend time with the children while they are little and then I can also study.0
