computer not reading HDD from Dock

I had a laptop that stopped powering up (from mains or battery)
I took out the HDD and bought a HDD Dock.
I plug the dock in to the mains, and connect to a computer via USB.
The drive shows up on the computer. I insert the HDD into the dock and hear a whirring.
But when I double clikc on the drive icon it says "insert a disk into drive".
Any suggestions?
Thank you

Does it appear in Disk Manager. Are you sure the reason the old laptop wasn't booting was because the disk had died??0
-
Hi
It appears in disk manager but 0Mb on it.
I can hear the HD whirring in the dock and the drive appears in My computer but when clicking on it, it says please insert disk,
The laptop showed power going in but when pressing the power on button, it lit up and then died.0 -
That's not indicative of a hard drive problem. If it was, you'd have got a system error message ('boot error', 'no system disk found', etc), but the laptop would still power up.
What you describe sounds like a power supply issue or a mobo problem. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thank you macman. That was my view which was why I wanted to use the dock to extract what was on the HD.0

How old was the laptop that his drive came from? Did it have any sort of encryption on it?0
-
It is a SATA drive.
The laptop was perhaps 5 years old??
No encryption.0 -
So, just to clarify, you are installing the disk in the caddy before powering on and connecting via USB?0
